Thousands of years ago, this group of pictures and symbolism somehow coalesed into a single deck, and was passed on for centuries in this amazingly pure form. Only those that knew the secrets of the symbols and pictures could use the decks. They claimed they received wisdom and knowledge on many levels from "The Book of Thoth" or Tarot. Other people couldn't explain how these Tarot users perceived this knowledge, but many were frightened at the accuracy and depth of which Tarot users could perceive. As always, ignorance and misunderstanding brought rumors, stories, and myths to the masses. Over the centuries, the Tarot has been thought of as black magic or some other mystifying and dangerous thing.
Exactly what is Tarot? Is it fortune telling? No, contrary to popular belief, it really isn't. Is it devil worship or witchcraft? No. Tarot has been used by witches and occult people, but most had little idea of its full meaning. Is Tarot a game? No, although one can play games with the cards and consider them a game. Our modern day playing cards are based on Tarot cards. Many card games such as "Old Maid" and possibly "Gin Rummy" have their roots in Tarot.
How would a modern scientific mind classify Tarot? The answer is: as a problem-solving method. One uses calculus to solve certain types of problems, biology for other types, and Tarot for still other types. As you will find, Tarot is one of the most potent problem-solving methods known to man. One reason for that is because Tarot involves the artistic side of our brains in the problem-solving process. However, there is more than just problem solving. The symbolism and pictures of the Tarot show cycles of life, balances of nature, insights to human behavior, and more. As man can learn of himself and life from nature, so can he learn from Tarot: a reflection of nature, man, and the nature of man.
